The American in Constantinople, 1800-1901
edited by Samuel Retsov,
with an introduction by Edward Foster
ISBN-13: 978-1-58498-102-2, $18.95
The American in Constantinople includes selections reprinted from travel books and commentaries on the Ottoman Empire written by Americans and published between 1817 and 1901. Together these selections constitute a conversation about Constantinople, modern Istanbul, as seen by Americans in the nineteenth century. At times the selections may tell us less about the city than about the ways it was seen by Americans who arrived with very set interests and biases; in short, the book concerns nineteenth-century Americans as much as it concerns the city itself.
Edited by Samuel Retsov, former Istanbul resident and university instructor, the book includes an introduction by Edward Foster, professor of American Studies in the College of Arts and Letters at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
